Scientists hail autoimmune disease therapy breakthrough
CAR T-cell therapy, a revolutionary new technique in reengineering T cells in Lupus, was found to effectively ‘cure’ five seriously ill Lupus patients. CAR T-cell therapy involves collecting the patient’s T cells and modifying them so that they attack new targets, in this case the patient’s B cells, when infused back into the body. The technique is highly specialised and expensive. A basket CAR T-cell therapy trial is being planned, covering a range of B cell diseases including GPA.
